Matthew 26:41 – Recovery is Difficult

There are difficulties in recovery. Regardless of what we are recovering from, the body, spirit, mind, and emotions are not always in sync. It reminds me of Jesus lamenting “the spirit is willing but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41). What we want is not always what we want.
Yes you read that last sentence correctly. “We” are not just flesh or just spirit. This is the war within. This is the battle in recovery. “We” are not always united with ourselves.
What brought this to my mind are two things: 1) Being with people trying to recover, to get back what they have lost; 2) I am recovering.
Remember I said it could be from anything. Right now I am recovering from years of pain culminating in surgery. Along the way, my body has needed medication which is poison in moderation. I am recovering in the flesh, but also in the spirit. My body and my mind must get back to being able to, but also wanting to do more. I miss being more useful.
I share this confession with you because I want anyone who is recovering to experience something important – none of us are alone. We have each other. More importantly, we have God. Matthew 26:41 begins with both an instruction and our hope – “Pray that you don’t enter into temptation.” Temptation means our bodies, spirits, minds, and emotions, all must fight together against being divided.
