3 Effects of the Gospel Crucified
3 Effects of the Gospel Crucified (Matthew 27:51-53)
Jesus is the gospel. When Jesus died, the following happened:
1. RELIGIOUS EFFECT – At that moment the curtain of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom.
2. EARTHLY EFFECT – The earth shook, the rocks split and the tombs broke open.
3. PHYSICAL EFFECT – The bodies of many holy people who had died were raised to life. They came out of the tombs after Jesus’ resurrection and went into the holy city and appeared to many people.
All three effects are connected to the reversal of sin’s effects:
1. Sin effected a division between God and mankind, reversed in the tearing of the curtain. Adam and Eve are kicked out of God’s Edenic temple (Genesis 3), disfellowshipped from the close relationship to one more closed off. All now have an opportunity to come unto God’s presence.
2. Sin effected a curse onto the “land” and entire earth. This is seen in Adam’s curse (Genesis 3), and repeated in Israel’s time within the Promised Land of milk and honey becoming drought and famine. Paul writes in Romans 8 this will be reversed.
3. Sin effected death, both physical and spiritual, upon mankind. “The day you eat” started the death process as mankind lost the tree of life (Genesis 3). Resurrection reverses this, and these saints walking into Jerusalem foreshadow Jesus’s.
All three effects are part of Jesus’s gospel. When Jesus died on earth, heaven declared the effects bought by His blood: “Fellowship”, “New heavens and new earth”, “Eternal life”.
Have you been effected by Jesus’s gospel?
