5 Congregational Reasons for Not Evangelizing
Congregational Motivations for NOT Evangelizing
I’ve seen or heard all six. Which stage or level of evangelism is evident within your congregation? It probably is not verbalized, as much as it is witnessed:
Reason 1 – FEARFUL – The fear can be of “contamination” from sinful lives, strange ideas, or just strangers. Visitors are viewed in suspicion and ran off if they don’t speak the secret code words shared among “sound” churches.
Reason 2 – DOUBT – The idea is that “Our building is paid for. What if we add on to the building and can’t afford it, or people don’t stay?”
Reason 3 – TALKERS – All talk and no action. Gospel meetings on evangelism are scheduled. Special classes too. Nothing happens. They don’t believe in faith without works. They just practice it.
Reason 4 – PROUD – Regardless of size, their evangelism consists of a sign out front. “People know where to come”. They are keepers of the aquarium and not fishers of men.
Reason 5 – CONTENT – Talk about keepers of the aquarium, this is a full tank! Large, so they see no need to grow. They grow by “transfer growth” draining others. They rely on fully mature Christians moving in. Plus, they don’t have room in the building and have plenty to do already. Instead of outward, their focus is totally inward on the local congregation.
Reason 6 – FAITHFUL – No excuses. Busy searching and building!
