A “Type” of Prophecy
A “Type” of Prophecy
“This prophecy was obviously made after the historical event”. Such admissions are common and “admit” more about the author of that statement than the Author of the Biblical prophecy. A “type” of prophecy overlooked by these scholarly skeptics is “types”. A type is a living prophecy.
For example, Paul looked back via inspiration and saw that God had looked forward when creating Adam and Eve. These historical figures are types, representing Christ and the Church. Prophecy takes place not only in words God inspired men to say, but also in actions by God and providentially through men and women. Adam and Eve were living prophetic types.
Ephesians 5 shows God foreshadowed the Christ-Church relationship from the beginning:
1. Two men were put to “sleep” on the 6th day. Adam was put into a deep sleep on the 6th day. Jesus was crucified on a Friday.
2. Two men had their sides torn open. Adam had a rib removed by God. Jesus’s side was pierced by a soldier’s spear.
3. Two men then received their brides from being asleep and having their sides torn open. Adam awoke and saw Eve. Jesus’s bride came after His resurrection. .
4. Two men had it said about them, For this reason a man will leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two will become one flesh (Genesis 2:24; Ephesians 5:31).
Considering creation itself foretells Christ and the Church, no wonder Paul added,
Ephesians 5:32 (CSB) This mystery is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church.
For God, historical events can themselves be prophecies.
