Abbott and Costello and Moses

The funniest and most famous comedy routine ever is arguably Abbott and Costello’s Who’s On First. In the form of that routine, what if we imagine a conversation between Moses and Israel when God rained manna from heaven.

• ISRAEL – What is it?

• MOSES – Correct.

• ISRAEL – What?

• MOSES – What.

• ISRAEL – This. What is it?

• MOSES – Correct.

• ISRAEL – Why aren’t you saying what is it?

• MOSES – I am saying, what is it.

• ISRAEL – Stop repeating, what is it.

• MOSES – You asked what is it and I agreed what is it.

• ISRAEL – This stuff from heaven, what is it?

• MOSES – Yes, what is it!

Like the 2nd baseman in Who’s on First, whose name is What, the word manna means, “What is it?”
