American First or Christian First?
American First or Christian First?
Politics are dividing Americans, but that is secondary to this exercise. Politics are a stumbling block to evangelism and Jesus said what about stumbling blocks?
Matthew 18:7 – Woe to the world because of its stumbling blocks! For it is inevitable that stumbling blocks come; but woe to the person through whom the stumbling block comes!
As Americans we have the freedom of speech to criticize our leaders. True, but as Christians are we guided more by the Constitution or God’s word?
“We don’t have a king so any passage that says to honor the king does not apply to us”. Actually we do. What does our king say about treating government authories with contempt? Even Jesus submitted to the earthly authorities. Jesus healed the ear of the man who came to arrest Him.
Let’s briefly compare the Bible to some of the Bill of Rights.
#1A ‐ Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion….
The American government gives me freedom of religion and from religion without consequences. Does God give me freedom of religion? Or will all bow the knee to Jesus (Phil.2:10-11)? As a Christian, the first part of the Bill of Rights does not apply…as a Christian.
#1B ‐ or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press;
Freedom of speech is guaranteed by our Constitution. Can Christians say and write whatever we want? Read again Ephesians 4:29; 5:4. As a Christian, the second part of the Bill of Rights does not apply…as a Christian.
#3 – No Soldier shall, in time of peace be quartered in any house, without the consent of the Owner, nor in time of war, but in a manner to be prescribed by law.
Jesus said, “if anyone forces you to go one mile, go with him two” (Matthew 5:41). That is a difference between Roman Law and Gospel Ethics. As a Christian, the 3rd Amendment of the Bill of Rights does not apply…as a Christian.
We have freedom in America, but not freedom from how God said we should act towards the government. Stop citing our Constitution as your right to disobey your real Constitution – God’s word. Remember, as Christians we are strangers and exiles in America (1 Peter 1:1).
