1 Corinthians 6:1 and Acts 2:38 – Compared, Contrasted, and Necessary
Many do not consider baptism necessary for salvation. For your consideration compare these two verses:
1 Corinthians 6:11 – And some of you used to be like this. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.
Acts 2:38 – Peter said to them,“Repent, and be baptized, each of you, in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.
Just as Jesus and Holy Spirit are involved in our washing (by blood and water) sanctification (making us holy), and justification (making us innocent); the Holy Spirit and Jesus are involved in our repentance, baptism, forgiveness, and receiving the Holy Spirit.
The difference between these two verses is Paul is emphasizing what is done to us; Peter is emphasizing what we do and then adding what is done to us. Just as we can’t be saved without divine washing, sanctification, and justification; we cannot be saved without repentance, baptism, forgiveness, and the Holy Spirit. “Why do you delay? Get up and be baptized and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord” – Ananias to Paul (Acts 22:16).
