Acts 2:38 – Question and Answer as to Kai (and)
Question – “Concerning Acts 2:38 and the word and (kai) – “If I say ‘Take an aspirin AND water for your headache.’ only aspirin was necessary for the persons head ache. Water was not necessary.”
Answer – Unlike aspirin which has the power of curing a headache, neither repentance nor baptism have that power. It is the blood of Jesus that has the power. Therefore that analogy is actually and inadvertently a works oriented theology. We repent andare baptized because of the gospel story, because they are commands of God, because they are acts of submission; not because there is any cure or power in the acts themselves. That they are required is based upon the sovereignty of God, not the power of the acts themselves. That is why I must repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of my sins.
