Acts 4:2 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV
Acts 4:2 NASB being greatly disturbed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
Acts 4:2 HCSB (2004) because they were provoked that they were teaching the people and proclaiming in the person of Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
Acts 4:2 HCSB (2010) because they were provoked that they were teaching the people and proclaiming the resurrection from the dead, using Jesus as the example.
Acts 4:2 ESV greatly annoyed because they were teaching the people and proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
Being “disturbed” (NASB) or “annoyed” (ESV) do not carry the emotions that the scene of Peter and John being arrested deserves, although by strict definition, they are correct. “Provoked” (HCSB) fits better and still fits the definition which in the literal sense speaks of toilsome labor.
However, what I do not like about the HCSB here is the verbosity. For a translation that celebrates its linguistic, both the 2004 and 2010 versions add unneeded words – “”the person of” (2004); “using…as the example.”
