Acts 8:36-37 – How Much Do We Need To Know?

An exercise: How much do you have to know to be saved? Some might counter, “Not ‘how much’, but Who?” Fair enough. “How much do you have to know about Jesus?” The obvious answer is “That Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God” (Acts 8:37). Fair enough, but by “Son of God” do you mean what the Mormons mean? What about the Jehovah Witnesses meaning? Or, do you mean what has been classified as orthodoxy? I ask these questions because two mistakes are classically made: 1) Dumb-down knowledge; 2) Make salvation a SAT test. The answer to how much is unknown. This can strike fear into some. Fear not. God wants you to be saved. No one is saved by an intelligence test (Matthew 11:25). This can strike complacency in others. But how can you love Jesus without wanting to know as much as possible? In the end, how much do we need to know is not about God having enough information to save us. It is about us wanting to know. We study the scriptures to find Jesus (John 5:39-40) who came to find us. So keep searching the mind of Christ (1 Corinthians 2:16). Within that mind we find salvation. Trust Jesus and learn about Him and from Him. That’s what discipleship is about: learning and imitating. Now start exercising.
