Zechariah 3 and Colossians 2-3
I will not say that Paul consciously alluded to Zechariah 3, but notice how Colossians 2-4 has many parallel thoughts to Zechariah 3.
SATAN ACCUSES JOSHUA – Then he showed me Joshua the high priest standing before the angel of Yahweh, and Satan standing at his right hand to accuse him.
• Colossians 2:14 – there is a certificate of debt caused by our failure to meet God’s obligations.
YAHWEH REBUKES SATAN – And Yahweh said to Satan, “Yahweh rebuke you, Satan! Indeed, Yahweh who has chosen Jerusalem rebuke you! Is this not a brand delivered from the fire?”
• Colossians 2:15 – Jesus will triumph over Satan and his authorities.
YAHWEH COMMANDS FILTHY CLOTHES REMOVED – Now Joshua was clothed with filthy garments and standing before the angel. And he answered and spoke to those who were standing before him, saying, “Remove the filthy garments from him.”
• Colossians 3:5-9 – Our filthy clothes are the sins we have committed. We “wear” our sins. These are our “grave clothes”.
YAHWEH COMMANDS CLEAN CLOTHES PUT ON – Again he said to him, “See, I have made your iniquity pass away from you and will clothe you with festal robes.” Then I said, “Let them put a clean turban on his head.” So they put a clean turban on his head and clothed him with garments, while the angel of Yahweh was standing by.
• Colossians 3:10-14 – We replace wrong actions with right ones. These are our “grace clothes”.
ANGEL OF YAHWEH TESTIFIES TO JOSHUA: And the angel of Yahweh testified to Joshua, saying, “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘If you will walk in My ways and if you will keep the responsibility given by Me, then you will also render justice in My house and also keep My courts, and I will grant you access to walk among these who are standing here.
• Colossians 3:15-4:6 – How we treat others is an expression of God’s justice, but as we see in Zechariah, justice includes mercy and grace.
