Ephesians 1-2 – Race Talk
Daily there seems to be race in the news. History is filled with nation on nation warfare. The land birthed with “all men are created equal” is rife with race against race. Is there hope?
There might not be a better anti-racism treatise than Ephesisans 1-2. In fact it was written exactly for that purpose; to help one group not feel superior, and the other not inferior.
For a couple of thousand years, God chose a nation to bring His Messaih through. He could have chosen the Cushites, Egyptians, or anyone. By grace God chose the enslaved Israelites (Deuteronomy 6:10-12). There’s a lesson just in that!
Living separately as a symbol of holiness caused hostility between this small nation and the world. The coming Messiah removed, through His cross, this barrier caused by special laws. The resulting hope became one new man, again by grace (Ephesians 2:4-5,8).
Sadly, mankind keeps putting up barriers, whether nationalities, outward appearances, differing cultures, thus making insignificant in their eyes and actions the cross. Disturbingly, people who claimed to be Christians have been some of the worst offenders. God never made superior and inferior, or separate but equal. God makes one new man in Christ. And yet still, out of hate, races shed the blood of those for whom Jesus shed blood (2:13). Shameful.
Ephesians 2:14: “For he is our peace, the one who turned both groups into one and who destroyed the middle wall of partition, the hostility, in his flesh….”
Now if you have problems with this, whether in congregations, or families, your problem is with God. So read and practice Ephesians 1-2.
