Ephesians 5:15 – Wasting Time
I admit it. I waste time watching miscellaneous YouTube videos. Two things are common among them all:
1. More people watch than make comments about them.
2. No matter how excellent some will give it a thumbs down.
The church is sadly like this too. Does that surprise you?
1. More will sit around and watch, than who actually work. It’s the 80/20 rule. No matter the group, whether religious or secular, generally only 20% are actively involved.
2. While sitters sit, they complain. There are people you can never please. They will argue over the color of blue when you say the sky is blue.
Sadly, why is a church exactly like every other organization, even miscellaneous videos? Churches are filled with human beings with unchanged human natures; not disciples allowing God to change us. We have grown comfortable with the old self-remaining stagnant; instead of growing into Christ’s likeness.
Just look at the surprisingly basic bad behavior Paul has to remind the Colossian church is wrong: “9) Do not lie to one another since you have put off the old self with its practices 10) and have put on the new self. You are being renewed in knowledge according to the image of your Creator” (Colossians 3:9-10). Christians who follow Christ, who said of Himself, “I am the truth”, have to be told to stop lying!?
What we need to admit is too often we haven’t been changed; we just comfortably follow some non-threatening doctrines. If we aren’t careful, we will waste more than time.
Ephesians 5:15 Pay careful attention, then, to how you walk — not as unwise people but as wise — 16 making the most of the time, because the days are evil.
