1 Corinthians 9:19-23 – Church Growth
I just finished reading an article on church growth. Nothing unscriptural in this particular article although it focuses on generic themes. However, the first paragraph hooked me – as is fitting in good writing. What hooked me is not the last sentence showing success. So I will include only the first two sentences.
“I started … 10 years ago. My goal was to reach people far from God and disciple them to maturity. Here was my problem: after 18 months of ministry, we hadn’t seen one person come to know Christ at …. This realization led to serious changes that took place in our church.”
Being a Christian means making changes. And yet somehow once we become “mature” we fear change, even if it is the order of services. I admire the attitude in this first paragraph. They were not reaching people, so they decided to make changes. For us, the emphasis is not whether the changes were scriptural or unscriptural. I do not know what they were except in general forms. What is important for us is the attitude. Are we reaching others for Christ? If not, is there anything we can do to change? What is our attitude?
