Beginning and Ending the Last Week of Jesus
At the beginning of the last week, on Sunday, Jesus entered Jerusalem riding a donkey. First century Jews, including Jesus’s own disciples, thought Jesus came to deal a blow to imperial Roman power. They failed to see the greater struggle; and by “greater” I mean more important and more powerful.
On Thursday of the last week, Jesus celebrated the last Passover with his apostles. Jews were remembering God freeing them from Egyptian oppression. Making that event more meaningful and hopeful was their current Roman oppression, as they awaited once more for deliverance. Again, they failed to see the greater deliverance.
Jesus came to free them from Satanic oppression. Jesus came to destroy other imperial powers too, much more personal. There’s the power of self ruling, instead of surrendering to God. There’s the power of self again, domineering one another instead of serving and submitting.
1 John 3:8b – The Son of God was revealed for this purpose: to destroy the devil’s works.
Let’s not fail to see Jesus’s real purpose in our lives and churches.
