1 Peter and Jesus #4 – Impartiality
1 Peter and Jesus #4 – There are many hints within this epistle of Peter’s walk with Jesus. This next one shows how Peter continued to walk with Jesus after His incarnation ended, learning from Jesus continually. In Acts 10:9-16 Peter receives a vision of unclean animals from the “Lord.” Usually in Acts, “Lord” (Acts 10:14) means Jesus. From this, and combined with the visitors and the Holy Spirit telling him to go, Peter necessarily inferred the Gentiles were not to be considered unclean. Then Peter began to speak: “Now I really understand that God doesn’t show favoritism (prosōpolēmptēs), but in every nation the person who fears Him and does righteousness is acceptable to Him” (Acts 10:34-35). Now he “truly understand(s)” (NET) what he preached on Pentecost when he said then, “For the promise is for you and for your children, and for all who are far off, as many as the Lord our God will call” (Acts 2:39). Alluding to these Gentiles in 1 Peter 1:17, Peter reiterates, “And if you address as Father the One who judges impartially (aprosōpolēmptōs) based on each one’s work, you are to conduct yourselves in fear during the time of your temporary residence.”
