1 Peter – Patternistic Christianity
Teaching 1 Peter starting tonight, and let me just say WOW! I am beginning to think 1 Peter is the most “patternistic” epistle in the NT, more so than Paul’s glorious epistles. While Paul likewise preludes the practical with declarations of the gospel, so does Peter; but Peter ties the glorious gospel themes together more concretely. For example, both follow the gospel with commands to husbands, wives, and servants. But Peter carries the sufferings of Jesus continually through his exhortations to wives, husbands, and servants. So by “patternistic” I mean, Jesus is the pattern throughout everything that we follow: Chosen; Temporary Resident; Holy; Suffering; Hope; Reward. If you want a book that teaches how to live the cruciform life, check out 1 Peter. It’s not a book of theory and mysticism, but of hard realities.
