4 Ways to Desire Being An Overseer
I’ve long believed the emphasis on “desire” is connected to the deeper question of spiritual maturity, which does not allow mere external circumstances or influences* to discourage or impede one’s appointment.
* Examples:
1. I just can’t do the job (you are not doing it by yourself; it’s not about you, at all);
2. I don’t need to take on a gut-eating job (but you can turn that perception on its head for all who will follow you and your fellow elders, who share that burden according the working of God’s Spirit in the inner man of each of you, with the power which works beyond all you may ask or think);
3. I don’t have the wisdom to make the necessary judgments in oversight (and that’s why you and other bishops share the task and form a collective wisdom; again, it’s not about you);
4. People who knew me in my youth don’t respect me (and so, this is your opportunity to show what real maturity looks like and to do so with confidence and wisdom in abundance);
5. I’ve never met an elder who possessed what the qualifications require him to be (no doubt, you’ve imposed a standard which God has not and are harshly judging those who are made by the Holy Spirit; if the Holy Sprite couldn’t make qualified men, then why even mention it or give clear instructions on what the job requires and the things forbidden to those who are in oversight?);
6. Etc…
