1 Timothy 2:7 – I’ve Been There
I’VE BEEN THERE – Seeing yourself in the Bible is both dangerous yet necessary. Making it personal is a must; but we must not make it say something to us it was not saying originally.
For example, here is a scripture in which I see myself. Paul writes to Timothy, “For this I was appointed a herald, an apostle (I am telling the truth; I am not lying), and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth” (1 Timothy 2:7).
The painful parentheses hit me personally. Timothy was Paul’s “true child in the faith” (1:2). I can’t see Timothy doubting Paul, but who knows. Maybe Timothy was being influenced by those who did. That’s a raw reality of betrayal most of us have felt. Most likely the doubters are the target of Paul’s profession and confession. Having others doubt you, your ministry, motives, mindset, and more is nothing new. When someone does, remember…as we can see here, we are not the first. Don’t attack them how they did you; instead, read and perform 1 Timothy 2:1-6. They need your prayers. That’s how you read them into the text.
