1 Timothy 3:1 – Desiring to be an Elder and Desiring to have Elders

Congregations need elders. We need elders which is evident from discussions with people, and scriptural. Let’s ask two questions:
I. How does one begin to desire this noble work (1 Timothy 3:1)? Here are three distinct, but noble reasons:
1. Looking forward as a young man, he can decide that this is a way he can serve God and others.
2. Looking backwards as an older man, he can see how God has blessed him with the qualities described, and out of gratitude, duty, or loyalty, he serves God and others.
3. Looking currently as an older man, he sees the wisdom of God and the need in the congregation.
All three of these show the desire to love God with our hearts, souls, and minds; and our neighbors as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39). Love for others is the basis for a man to desire becoming an elder.
II. How does a congregation begin to desire this noble work (1 Timothy 3:1)?
1. Recognize that inspiration says it is good for a man to desire this and therefore do not look suspiciously upon anyone who rightly desires to serve God.
2. Recognize that current conditions are less than ideal and if we desire to give God our best then we as a congregation cannot settle for “We’re doing OK.”
3. Recognize whether men are already doing much of the work which shows their qualifications; and therefore desire to go further by submitting to these men in having them appointed.
All three of these show the desire to follow God’s plan. Love of God is the basis for a congregation to desire elders.
