1 Timothy 5:14 – House Despot?
Husbands are the head of the home. Wives are the head of the house. Paul wrote women are to “keep house” (NASB) which is not a good rendering. “Manage their households” (HCSB) much better. The actual word Paul used was oikodespotéō. Broken down, the first part, oiko, means house. Now look at the second part – despite. What English word do we derive from that? Despot. Wives and mothers are “house despots!” This is never more true than when giving orders because company is coming! “I want this Mommy-clean, do you hear me?” “Yes, oh mighty despot. We hear you.”
