Judges – Old Cycles and New Creation
The period of the Judges is cyclical: Sinning – Suffering – Supplication – Salvation. The Salvation included the period of the judge’s leadership. Theologian James B. Jordan said the entire Bible has three recurring themes in which I will add a second: Creation – Corruption* – Collapse – Re-creation. I added Corruption (could be called Crisis) because sin is the corruption of Creation leading to Collapse and then by grace Re-creation. While Collapse can include both the cause (sin) and the effect (destruction), it is beneficial to me to keep them separate. God created (Gen.1,2), sin corrupted (3-6), the flood caused the collapse (6-7) and then the flood caused re-creation (8-9). Other events could be added. God created family (Gen.1-4); Jealously corrupted the brotherhood bond (4); Murder collapsed the family (4); Re-creation came through Seth whose family then began to call on the name of the Lord (4). Combined, Re-creation is Salvation (2 Cor,5:17). All this is written to help us internalize our stage of life and state before God. Where are we?
