John 18 – I Am; I Am Not
Interesting contrast: When Jesus answers the question “Who are you looking for?” and they say, “Jesus the Nazarene”, He confesses “I Am” (lit., Jn.18.5-8). The soldiers step back and fall down to the ground. They understand and in their own awkward, fearful way, confess. When Peter is questioned, “You aren’t one of this man’s disciples too are you?” Peter confesses his denial, “I am not.” Jesus says, “I Am,” meaning He is Yahweh, He is Everything. Peter says, “I am not,” meaning his friendship and discipleship mean nothing. When the rooster crows, the rooster confesses the prophesied truth that Peter would deny His Lord (Jn.13:38).
