John 6 – Quoting Scripture Isn’t Enough
John 6:30: ““What sign, then, are you going to do so we may see and believe you?” they asked. “What are you going to perform? (CSB’17)
This is part of a scene where:
1) Jesus had earlier fed, via miracle, a hungry crowd who followed Him (Check John 5 to see Jesus didn’t offer food to attract the crowd).
2) Then afterwards the crowd falsely followed Jesus for food (There’s a lesson in wrong motives).
3) Jesus rebukes their materialistic motives saying “Truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled.” (John 6:26).
So what do they do? They quote scripture! They even use the same authoritative phrasing as Jesus, “it is written”: “Our ancestors ate the manna in the wilderness, just as it is written: He gave them bread from heaven to eat.”” (John 6: 31).
What’s their motive for using scripture? Was it for truth or to win an argument and self-advantage? (Here we see questionable motives again).
Jesus wants to deepen their understanding that He is the Bread of Life (vv.32,41,48); but before He can, they demand, “Sir, give us this bread always.” (John 6:34). This language reminds me of the woman at the well: ““Sir,…give me this water so that I won’t get thirsty and come here to draw water.”” (John 4:15). She went on to desire living water more than that from a well.
Those in John 6 complained. Ironically, they ended up starving to death spiritually, despite their ability to quote scripture.
