1 Samuel 1; Luke 1 – Samuel and John the Baptist

When we compare Samuel and John the Baptist’s narratives, we find remarkable similarities. Such are giant coincidences or grand conspiracies, or what they truly are – marks of inspiration and divine authenticity.

  • Tribe of Levi (1 Chron.6.22-28; Lk.1.5)
  • Wife Barren (1 Sam.1.2; Lk.1.7)
  • House of God – Tabernacle and Temple (1 Sam.1.7; Lk.1.9)
  • Prayer for a child (1 Sam.1.10-11; Lk.1.13)
  • Hints that son becomes “Nazarite” (1 Sam.1.11; Lk.1.15)
  • Birth “Promised” (1 Sam.1.17-18; Lk.1.13)
  • Son born (1 Sam.1.20; Lk.1.57)
  • Names of sons based upon God (1 Sam.1.20 – Samuel means “Asked of God/God hears;” Lk.1.13 – John means “God is Gracious”)
  • Praises Offered by Parent (1 Sam.2.1-10; Lk.1.67-79)
  • Praises Similar in Language and Themes (i.e., horn, enemies, etc)
  • Narratives include report of child’s growth (1 Sam.1.19; Lk.1.80)
  • Both become prophets (1 Sam.1.20; Lk.1.76)
  • Both Prepared for God’s Anointed (1 Sam.1.16; Lk.1.76)
