Joseph – A Type of Jesus
Many have noticed how Joseph is a type of Jesus. At the very beginning of Joseph’s narrative, we start noticing similarities. One such comparison is found in a chastisement scene of parent to child. Notice the similarities:
• Joseph is young – 17.
o Jesus is young – 12.
• Father rebukes son.
o Mother rebukes son.
• Father is confused.
o Mother is confused.
• Father mentions both father and mother (even though mother dead).
o Mother mentions both father and mother.
• Father keeps the matter in mind.
o Mother keeps all these things in her heart.
Genesis 37:9-11 [HCSB] 9 Then he had another dream and told it to his brothers. “Look,” he said, “I had another dream, and this time the sun, moon, and 11 stars were bowing down to me.” 10 He told his father and brothers, but his father rebuked him. “What kind of dream is this that you have had?” he said. “Are your mother and brothers and I going to come and bow down to the ground before you?” 11 His brothers were jealous of him, but his father kept the matter in mind.
Luke 2:48-51 [HCSB] 48 When His parents saw Him, they were astonished, and His mother said to Him, “Son, why have You treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for You.” 49 “Why were you searching for Me?” He asked them. “Didn’t you know that I had to be in My Father’s house?” 50 But they did not understand what He said to them. 51 Then He went down with them and came to Nazareth and was obedient to them. His mother kept all these things in her heart.
