Luke 14:1-6 – Two Warnings About What We Believe
Jesus wasn’t polite if, in polite company, you don’t talk about religion – especially bad religion.
There was a time when Jesus was discussing religion that we see two warnings that still apply today. These reveal how one can know: 1) That we aren’t believing right; and 2) That we are dishonest in our religious beliefs. These warnings are: 1) If we are unwilling to give an answer; 2) If we are unable to give an answer.
Notice these two clues applied in this story about religious leaders in Jesus’ day: One Sabbath, when he went in to eat at the house of one of the leading Pharisees, they were watching him closely. There in front of him was a man whose body was swollen with fluid. In response, Jesus asked the law experts and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?” But they kept silent (#1 – unwilling). He took the man, healed him, and sent him away. And to them, he said, “Which of you whose son or ox falls into a well, will not immediately pull him out on the Sabbath day?” They could find no answer to these things (#2 – unable) (CSB’17 Luke 14:1-6).
We must be willing and able to show God’s approval for our beliefs and actions. Truth is open and honest. A tender conscience is open to correction. Don’t be spiritually dishonest like the Pharisees. Be like Jesus, even if people think it is not polite.
