Luke 17:11-19 – The Ten Lepers Before They Met Jesus
You know the story of the Ten Lepers (Lk.17:11-19). You know what happened after they met Jesus. They went on their way to see the priests, and on the way they became cleansed. You even know that one returned. But I want to think about what happened before they met Jesus. The ten lepers were nine Jews and one Samaritan. All ten were in one village (11:12). All ten stood together at a distance from Jesus (11:12). All ten raised their voices together as one asking for merciful healing (11:13). All ten were unified even though all around them Jews and Samaritans were divided racially. What these ten had in common bound them together more powerfully than what would normally separate them. All ten had a disease. All ten were outcasts by their own people. But it is in their unity we can learn a powerful lesson. If we focus on what we have in common, and not what separates us, boundaries break and unity is built.
