Luke 5:1-11 – What Is Our “Boat”?
What is our “boat”? For Simon Peter, it was a real boat. Not just any boat, but his place of business, how he provided for his family. How does Jesus use Peter’s boat?
AS A PLATFORM FOR TEACHING – Jesus needed Peter’s boat because the crowd was pressing around him so Jesus just “got into one of the boats”. Jesus doesn’t ask permission; he just assumes Peter will not complain. After all, Jesus had just healed his mother-in-law (Luke 4:38-39), so Peter “owed” Jesus.
AS PROOF OF IDENTITIES – When Jesus finished teaching, he told Peter to “put out into the deep water and let down your nets for a catch”. Peter is tired, but Jesus is trying to prove something. What Jesus proves is something about Himself, and the opposite about Peter.
AS POSTING FOR A JOB – After the great catch of fish, and Peter’s humble profession of sinfulness, Jesus offers Peter a job – to become a “fisher of men”. Peter accepts.
What is our “boat”? What is it of ours that Jesus can use today to teach others through us? What identifies us as repenting believers? What in our life do we need to leave behind? What is our “boat”? (Luke 5:1-11)
