Mark 1:10 – NASB vs. HCSB vs. ESV
Mark 1:10 NASB Immediately coming up out of the water, He saw the heavens opening, and the Spirit like a dove descending upon Him;
Mark 1:10 HCSB As soon as He came up out of the water, He saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending to Him like a dove.
Mark 1:10 ESV And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove.
The gospel of Mark is a gospel of action. The word translated “opening” (NASB) schizō and means, 1) to cleave, cleave asunder, rend; 2) to divide by rending (Thayer). The NASB is too generic, and the HCSB and ESV get the translation correct.
This also forms a nice little bookend to Mark 15:38 where the same word is used again. However in Mark 15, the NASB and ESV says “torn” while the HCSB reads, “split.” I wish the HCSB would have kept the consistency seen in the ESV.
