Mark – How To Write A Sermon
How to Write a Sermon
There is no one right way to write a sermon. But taking Mark as a sermon, here is an inspired idea:
I. Memorable Opening:
1. Provocative or Informative Title or Opening Line – 1:1
2. Scripture – 1:2-3
3. Explanation or Interpretation – 1:4-11
II. In the middle, the beginning and end, are connected with facts, stories, actions, more scriptures, all to substantiate the opening theme.
III. Then comes the end, where Mark returns (bookends) his presentation by repeating themes;
1. From a call to action for John, to the apostles (1:2-11; 16:15ff).
2. From peace with wild animals to snakes (1:13; 16:18).
3. From John’s baptism to Jesus’s (1:8; 16:16).
4. From Jesus beginning to finishing what he began (1:1; 16:19)
Addendum – while there is controversy over the authenticity of the end of Mark, there shouldn’t be any denial that as a sermon it fits perfectly.
