New Creation in Mark 1:1-13
Sunday’s Sustenance – A theme of my study (and hopefully of the Bible then), is God keeps telling the same stories over and over, with different people and in different situations. This method is one way to see the hand of God in 66 books being 1 book. For example, in Mark 1:1-13, the story being retold is Genesis 1-3, of God beginning something new. Here is a list of 17 connections between these two historical, divinely orchestrated events:
1. Beginning (Genesis 1:1; Mark 1:1)
2. God – Plurality in One (Genesis 1:1; Mark 1:9-11)
3. Water (Genesis 1:2; Mark 1:4)
4. Holy Spirit (Genesis 1:2; Mark 1:8)
5. Holy Spirit Like a Bird (Genesis 1:2; Mark 1:10)
6. Voice from Above (Genesis 1:3; Mark 1:3)
7. Heavens Parted (Genesis 1:6-7; Mark 1:8)
8. God Pleased (Genesis 1:31; Mark 1:11)
9. Food Mentioned (Genesis 2:9; Mark 1:6)
10. River Mentioned (Genesis 2:10; Mark 1:5)
11. Workers Together (Genesis 2:18; Mark 1:2-3)
12. Man is with Animals (Genesis 2:19; Mark 1:13)
13. Man is Tempted by Satan (Genesis 3:1; Mark 1:13)
14. Sin Confessed (Genesis 3:12-13; Mark 1:5)
15. Man Wearing Clothes from Animals (Genesis 3:21; Mark 1:6)
16. Man Forced to Leave Because of Temptation (Genesis 3:23; Mark 1:12)
17. “Angels” Present (Genesis 3:24; Mark 1:13)
Doesn’t seeing God’s hand in creating His word cause within you awe at God’s power as much as seeing God’s created world? It does me! Add to that, God invites me to become part of His story of creation again. Will you accept that invite from God?
