Genesis 1; Matthew 3 – Old Beginning; New Beginning
There is not a total one to one correlation, but the similarities are there between the baptism of Jesus and creation.
1. The Spirit hovered over the water (Gen1:2). Hovering is a word associated with birds. In the baptism of Jesus the Holy Spirit descended as a dove (Mt.3:16).
2. “Then God said” (Gen.1:3ff). In Jesus’ baptism there is a voice from heaven saying, “This is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased” (Mt.3:17).
3. Water covers the earth (Gen.1:2)). Jesus is immersed, which is the meaning of baptism (Mt.3:15-16).
4. Genesis 1 is the beginning of creation. Jesus’ baptism marks the beginning of His public mission of new creation.
5. There is a separation between the 1st heaven and earth (Gen.1:6-8). The heavens split open (Mt.3:16).
While it is always possible to find similarities where they don’t exist (especially allegorical interpretations), some naturally occur. I think creation and Jesus’ baptism is one. What is important about such comparisons is it implies a single hand guiding all the writers.
