Marriage Lessons from an Unlikely Source
Thanks to one of our teachers (John Meadows) for doing the unexpected, by using a passage about an impending divorce, to teach about having a successful marriage (Matthew 1:19-24).
First the background: Joseph is betrothed or engaged to Mary. She is miraculously pregnant; but all he knows is what appears to be undeniable. He has been betrayed. How does he handle the hurt?
[ ] Put God First – “So her husband Joseph, being a righteous man,”
[ ] Think What’s Best for the Other – “and not wanting to disgrace her publicly”
[ ] Show Kindness/Mercy – “decided to divorce her secretly.”
[ ] Think Through Everything – “But after he had considered these things”
[ ] Remember Who He Is – “Joseph, son of David,
[ ] Willingness to Change Mind After New Information – “don’t be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit…When Joseph woke up, he did as the Lord’s angel had commanded him. He married her”
