Matthew 4:1-11; Matthew 6:9-13 – Echoes in the Lord’s Prayer from His Temptations
So much of Jesus’ wilderness experience is echoed within “The Lord’s Prayer.” This suggests to me that Jesus prayed what He experienced. Our prayers should be filled with the reality of this life and God’s life in us.
- “Our Father in heaven (6:9) – “If you are the Son of God” (4:3,6).
- “Hallowed/holy be Your name” (6:9) – “Worship the Lord Your God, and serve only Him” (5.10).
- “Your kingdom come. Your will be done on earth as it is in heaven” (6:10) – “The Devil showed Him all the kingdoms of the world and their splendor. And he said to Him, ‘I will give You all these things if You will fall down and worship me.’” (4:8-9).
- “Give us this day our daily bread” (6:11) – “He had fasted 40 days and 40 nights” (4:2); “Man must not live on bread alone but on every word that comes from the mouth of God” (4:4).
- “Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors” (4:12) – this is the only thought not echoed and rightfully so since Jesus was sinless.
- “Lead us not into temptation” (6:13) – “Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted” (4:1).
- “Deliver us from the Evil One” (6:13) – “The angels will support you” (4:6); “Then the Devil left Him” (4:11).
- “Yours is the kingodm and the power and the glory forever (6:13) – “Kingdoms of the world and their splendor (4:8).
