Matthew 5:23-24 – Before Little Problems Become Big Problems
“You’re the preacher from down the street, right?”
“Yes I am.”
“Well I just wanted to explain to you why earlier I ran away from you.”
That is a conversation I had in my neighborhood Monday while walking the dogs. Quite the strange way to begin a conversation with someone you don’t know, don’t you think?
Personally I don’t even remember the situation; but he did and it bothered him. I appreciate his willingness to ensure I didn’t misunderstand, have hurt feelings, or think less of him.
Jesus taught the same etiquette in His most radical sermon: “So if you are offering your gift on the altar, and there you remember that your brother or sister has something against you, leave your gift there in front of the altar. First go and be reconciled with your brother or sister, and then come and offer your gift” (CSB Matthew 5:23-24).
Jesus wants us practicing the 2nd Great Command if we are planning on approaching God in the 1st Great Command. Working out differences, and not holding grudges, are important spiritually; but they also protect us from further practical problems (5:25-26). Jesus is trying to protect us and those around us.
So why was this neighbor running away from me? He was trying to catch his dogs.
