Matthew 5:3-12 – Happiness Comes from What We Are
From Jesus’ Beatitudes, we glean from that happiness is determined by what we are. Blessed are: the poor in spirit; the gentle; the merciful; the pure in heart. Have you ever heard someone say, “You can never run away from your troubles because wherever you are, you always take you with you.” Well, the reverse of that is equally true. Happiness comes what we are on the inside, not what we have on the outside, or where we are on the outside. The following statement might be uncomfortable, but if the good qualities of being poor in spirit, gentle, merciful and pure in heart describe who we are, then the opposite is true. That means, we are our burdens.
If our problems come from the opposite of being poor in spirit, then we are haughty, self-assertive and self-sufficient disposition. If are burdens in life are caused by us not being gentle, then we are crude, rough, troubled, unkind, violent, and untamed spiritually. If our emotional encumbrances come from not being merciful, then we are cruel, merciless, unforgiving, and unkind. If our life is not filled with a pure heart, then we are suspicious, paranoid, disingenuous and hypocritical. No wonder so many people are unhappy because of what they are. If that is true, then change. Become, be, and continue to become, by being transformed and transfigured through grace what God wants you to be – which is like Him (Mt.5:48). This is the kingdom or reign of God in our lives.
