Matthew 5-7 – Ten Reasons the Sermon on the Mount is Good News #3
Because the Sermon on the Mount is found in Matthew’s gospel account, let’s just focus on some of those prophecies prior to the Sermon.
- Mathew 1:23; Isaiah 7:14 – The original promise given to Ahaz is about victory over enemies.
- Matthew 2:6; Micah 5:2 – Jesus is called a Shepherd and ruler, who leads to victory.
- Matthew 2:15; Hos.11:1 – This prophecy is about Jesus being antitypically Israel being led out of bondage.
- Matthew 3:3; Isaiah 40:3 – The entire chapter begins with the words, “Comfort, comfort my people.”
- Matthew 3:17; Isaiah 42:1 – This Servant passage speaks of justice being brought which is the same as fulfilling all righteousness. In the same chapter is the verse later quoted by Matthew in chapter 12 about not breaking a bruised reed or putting out a smoldering wick.
- Matthew 4:15-16; Isaiah 9:1-2 – Jesus brings light, even to the Gentiles.
Seeing the positive prophecies it seems unlikely then when Jesus preaches the Sermon on the Mount that He should be interested in preaching a negative gospel, to bring us bad news instead of good news. Jesus not only is our victory and leads us to victory, but also shows us how to live in victory. Living in victory is living a surpassing righteousness.
