Matthew 6:25-34 – Through the Eyes of A Jew
Sometimes I am amazed at how long it takes me to see what is there. Read Matthew 6:25-34 with a fresh reading of the History of the Israelites, coupled with the understanding that the gospel written by Matthew was predominently written with a Jewish audience in mind, and we might see the wilderness wanderings.
- “Do not be worried about your life” (Matthew 6:25) vs. “Would that we had died by the Lord’s hand in the land of Egypt” (Exodus 16:3); “Why, now, have you brought us up from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our livestock with thirst?” (Exodus 17:3)
- “Do not be worried about…what you will eat” (Matthew 6:25) vs. “when we sat by the pots of meat, when we ate the bread to the full; for you have brough us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly with hunger” (Exodus 16:3)
- “Do not be worried about…what you will drink” (Matthew 6:25) vs. “Give us water that we may drink” (Exodus 17:2)
- “Do not be worried about…what you will wear” (Matthew 6:25) vs. “Your clothes have not worn out on you” (Deuteronomy 29:5)
