Why is Love the Lord The Great Command?
Why? Why is “love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, and mind” the most important command (Deuteronomy 6:5; Matthew 22:37-38; Mark 12:30-31; Luke 10:27)? Jesus didn’t teach anything revolutionary when stating this. The expert in the law gave this same answer (Luke 10:27). So why?
[ ] The fact it follows (and is considered part of) the Shema enhances its importance. But why is it so important?
[ ] Jesus said so, that’s enough of a reason. But why did Jesus think and say so?
[ ] Jesus explains everything hangs on this command (along with the second). Why did God make that so?
According to one source, Socrates irritated everyone because whenever they gave an answer he would ask “Why?” And when they answered again he simply repeated, “Why?” So I’ll be irritating and ask again, “Why?”
Going personal and positive, all our worship begins with LOVE. Going negative we see – all our SINS are against God. Focus on that second part:
[ ] Cheat on taxes? That sin is first against God. So even though we “render to Caesar the things that are Caesar’s” (Matthew 22:21); we are serving God in so doing or sinning against God when neglecting.
[ ] Hold bitterness, hatred, envy, and such against people in church or others (Ephesians 4:25-32)? That sin is first against God. Sinning against those made in God’s image is sinful because of God’s image (James 3:9). So even when we break the 2nd Great Command, we first are breaking the first.
[ ] Neglect to help the poor? Amazingly God says that’s against Him too. God incarnate enlightened us on this (Matthew 25).
How many of us make it this simple? How many of us should? And one last question, if we don’t…why?
