Revelation 2:16 – “Someone Else”
I get surprised when the Bible does not say what I am expecting. Jesus warns a church they must repent against the false teaching of the Nicolaitans, or else he will come war against them. Except that is not what it said.
“So repent! Otherwise, I will come to you quickly and fight against them with the sword of my mouth” (CSB Revelation 2:16).
Instead of “I will fight against you” Jesus says he will come and fight against “them”.
The church in Pergamum are given the warning that they can fight false teaching with Jesus; or Jesus will find someone else – human servants is through whom Jesus fights in partnership and fellowship.
Do you think that let’s the wrong and complacent off of the proverbial hook? Is it comforting to hear Jesus to say, “I’m coming to fight, but apparently I can’t use you so I’ll find someone else”?
The applicable question here is not what do we need to be doing, but rather who do we need to be? Someone Jesus can count on, or does he need to find…someone else.
