Ecclesiastes 5:3 – Dreams and Vows
I do not believe this “dream” is what occurs when we sleep, but is parallel to dreams of fantasy or desires based upon imagination and grandeur (cf.v.7). The application to vows is that we need to be careful that our wishes are not bigger than what we can handle or what God wants us to handle! For example, vowing to God to baptize 20 people every year is very different from vowing to God to teach 20 people every year, which is still very different from vowing to God to ask 20 people to study every year. Only over the last vow do I have any sense of control.
