God’s Paintings
Words paint pictures. A picture might be worth a thousand words, unless it is God painting with words.
Notice this verse from the Song of Moses:
“The water heaped up at the blast from your nostrils; the currents stood firm like a dam. The watery depths congealed in the heart of the sea.” (CSB’17 Exodus 15:8)
Three different words for water. Three different descriptions of what happened to the water when God parted the Red Sea. “Heaped up” as in a pile. “Stood firm like a dam”, which is like a person standing at their position. “Congealed” means to thicken or become dense. Like ice, all three words describe the liquid water hardening.
Now notice this one more detail. In the third description, the Word Painter says this happened in the “heart” of the sea. The heart of the sea was hardened! The Song of Moses is retelling the story of Israel in Egypt but in reverse, turned upside down, in victory not enslavement. As Pharaoh’s heart was hardened keeping Israel captive, God now hardens the heart of the sea freeing the children of Israel to walk on dry land.
In words and song, God paints.
