Ezra – Who Am I? (Finding Jesus)
The book of Ezra foretells and foreshadows the coming of Christ in a rather intriguing and interesting way – not by one person, but through the two returns and their two leaders. Both individuals, Zerubbabel and Ezra, together tell the story of Christ and His coming kingdom.
- Both returns are equally decreed by a King who gives gifts to the people.
- Both are “returns” to the Promises, one the land and the other the seed.
- The restoration leaders of the Jewish return represent Jesus through two tribes, Kingly and Priestly. Zerubbabel is the descendant of David; and Ezra comes from Aaron. Together they represent what could not exist under the Law of Moses, the King-Priest that is found in Jesus Christ as the remnant returns to the Promises.
- The first leader emphasizes the temple and worship (1-7); while the second preaches on the law and purity through their separation resulting in righteousness (7-10). Jesus is the temple of God that we become through worship and righteousness.
The story of the Jewish return is the story of the coming of Christ, foretold, foreshadowed and for us. The book of Ezra teaches surprising lessons when read through the life of the revealed Coming One.
