Genesis 1-2 – What Does God’s Type of Husband Look Like?
What Does God’s Type of Husbands Look Like?
It is true that the creation narratives point to authority being found in the man’s role as husband. Warning! If we only see authority, we miss leadership, and warp God’s role of a husband into something ugly. If husbands, and all men, want to truly be the type of head or authority designed by God, the following all flow from God’s headship and then patterned by Adam.
• Identification – “in His own image” (1:26-27); “bone of my bone; flesh of my flesh (2:23)
• Value – “a helper suitable” (2:18,20); “this is why a man leaves his father and mother and bonds with his wife” (2:24)
• Celebration – “and it was very good” (1:31); “at last” (2:23)
• Blessing – “God blessed them, and God said to them, “be fruitful and multiply”; “Adam named his wife Eve because she was the mother of the living” (3:20)
Any husband who focuses solely on authority is not acting according to God’s authority over him:
• God’s husbands identify with their wives as each one belongs to the other in a unique way. This identity leads to faithfulness.
• God’s husbands value their wives acknowledging she is a needed help for him. Any man who does not rely on his wife’s advice is ignoring God.
• God’s husbands celebrate, compliment, and rejoice in their wives. Husbands need to brag on their wives as someone worthy and special.
• God’s husbands bless in all various ways, which involves identifying with, valuing, and celebrating. If husbands do not give to their wives so that she feels blessed by their relationship, then he is failing.
Can you see how all of this foreshadows Jesus’ headship of His bride, the church?
