Genesis 12-50 – Reliving the Patriarchs
Human history looks back, but divine history looks forward. The point of my little paradox is that what God did in the past, foreshadowed what He planned for the future. Therefore the future existed as a plan before the past became a reality.
- 1 Corinthians 2:7 HCSB On the contrary, we speak God’s hidden wisdom in a mystery, which God predestined before the ages for our glory.
- Ephesians 1:4 HCSB for He chose us in Him, before the foundation of the world, to be holy and blameless in His sight. In love
- 2 Timothy 1:9 HCSB who has saved us and called us with a holy calling, not according to our works, but according to His own purpose and grace, which was given to us in Christ Jesus before time began.
This can be seen through typology. This can be seen in the lives of the four patriarchs, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob and Joseph. The second half of Genesis (12-50) is about four main historical figures and God’s relationship with them:
- ABRAHAM –Supernatural Call.
- ISAAC – Supernatural Birth.
- JACOB – Supernatural Care.
- JOSEPH – Supernatural Control. (J. Sidlow Baxter, Explore the Book, p.29)
But greater in scope than the lives of these four men, is why and what God did with these four men. God prophesied through typology the coming of Christ. And God predicted the salvation of those who come to Christ.
ABRAHAM – Supernatural Call
Genesis 12:1-3 HCSB The LORD said to Abram: Go out from your land, your relatives, and your father’s house to the land that I will show you. (2) I will make you into a great nation, I will bless you, I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. (3) I will bless those who bless you, I will curse those who treat you with contempt, and all the peoples on earth will be blessed through you.
ISAAC – Supernatural Birth
Genesis 21:1-7 HCSB The LORD came to Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did for Sarah what He had promised. (2) Sarah became pregnant and bore a son to Abraham in his old age, at the appointed time God had told him. (3) Abraham named his son who was born to him–the one Sarah bore to him–Isaac. (4) When his son Isaac was eight days old, Abraham circumcised him, as God had commanded him. (5) Abraham was 100 years old when his son Isaac was born to him. (6) Sarah said, “God has made me laugh, and everyone who hears will laugh with me.” (7) She also said, “Who would have told Abraham that Sarah would nurse children? Yet I have borne him a son in his old age.”
JACOB – Supernatural Care
Genesis 32:10 HCSB I am unworthy of all the kindness and faithfulness You have shown Your servant. Indeed, I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two camps.
JOSEPH – Supernatural Control
Genesis 45:7 HCSB God sent me ahead of you to establish you as a remnant within the land and to keep you alive by a great deliverance.
When the Jewish nation saw Jesus, they should have seen their history being relived. The patriarchs foreshadowed the coming of Jesus.
JESUS – Supernatural Call
Isaiah 9:6-7 HCSB For a child will be born for us, a son will be given to us, and the government will be on His shoulders. He will be named Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Eternal Father, Prince of Peace. (7) The dominion will be vast, and its prosperity will never end. He will reign on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish and sustain it with justice and righteousness from now on and forever. The zeal of the LORD of Hosts will accomplish this.
JESUS – Supernatural Birth
Isaiah 7:14 HCSB Therefore, the Lord Himself will give you a sign: The virgin will conceive, have a son, and name him Immanuel.
JESUS – Supernatural Care
Psalms 91:11-12 HCSB For He will give His angels orders concerning you, to protect you in all your ways. (12) They will support you with their hands so that you will not strike your foot against a stone.
JESUS – Supernatural Control
Isaiah 53:10-12 HCSB Yet the LORD was pleased to crush Him, and He made Him sick. When You make Him a restitution offering, He will see His seed, He will prolong His days, and the will of the LORD will succeed by His hand. (11) He will see it out of His anguish, and He will be satisfied with His knowledge. My righteous servant will justify many, and He will carry their iniquities. (12) Therefore I will give Him the many as a portion, and He will receive the mighty as spoil, because He submitted Himself to death, and was counted among the rebels; yet He bore the sin of many and interceded for the rebels.
As if it was not wondrous enough that Jesus relived the patriarchs, or more accurately that He proved they existed to show the Jesus to the nation of Israel, we get to relive the life of Jesus and the patriarchs.
CHRISTIANS – Supernatural Call
1 Corinthians 1:24 HCSB (24) Yet to those who are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ is God’s power and God’s wisdom,
CHRISTIANS – Supernatural Birth
1 John 5:1-4 NASB Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves the Father loves the child born of Him. (2) By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and observe His commandments. (3) For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments; and His commandments are not burdensome. (4) For whatever is born of God overcomes the world; and this is the victory that has overcome the world–our faith.
CHRISTIANS – Supernatural Care
Ephesians 1:3 HCSB Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavens, in Christ;
CHRISTIANS – Supernatural Control
Philippians 4:13 HCSB I am able to do all things through Him who strengthens me.
Human history looks back, but divine history looks forward. Isn’t it exciting to be part of something that began and ends in eternity?
