Genesis 3, 12 and Beyond – From Curses to Blessings to Blessings
By grace, the original curses become the fresh blessings and then more wondrous than physically imaginable. What is happening in Genesis 12 when God makes promises to Abraham in this new beginning? Do the curses of Genesis 3 and the blessings of Genesis 12 have anything in common? Often the curses are divided into three (Serpent, Eve, Adam) and the blessings into three (Land, Nation, Seed). The cursed ground becomes the land promise that will flow with milk and honey. Children born in pain to a woman, becomes a great nation born from a man. Most importantly, both scenes include a cryptic promise of our Messiah (3.15; 12.3): The seed of the woman becomes the seed promise to Abraham (Gal.3.15).
- Similar – Both present new beginnings.
- Similar – God speaks directly to His creations in both.
- Similar – Curses are pronounced upon the Serpent, Eve and Adam (3.14-19); and on those who curse Abraham (12.3).
- Different – Adam and Eve are cursed but Abraham is blessed.
- Different – The blessed bodies cursed in Adam and Eve become the cursed body that will be blessed in Abraham (Rom 4.17-19).
- Different – The first couple is removed from their garden land (3.23-24) and Abraham is promised a land.
By grace the blessings continue to us. Our cursed bodies becomes blessed (1 Cor 15). We become a spiritual nation (1 Pet 2.9), inherit the new heavens and earth (Mt 5.5; 2 Pet 3.13), and are called His offspring, children of God (1 Jn 3.3). By the grace of God we are Abraham’s seed, heirs of the promise (Gal 3.27-29). By the grace of God, physical curses become physical blessings and then spiritual blessings.
