Genesis, Exodus, Esther – Egypt and Esther: Joseph, Moses, Esther and Mordecai
An interesting aspect of Esther is that it has connections to other Biblical stories, both of which are connected to Egypt. A method the Bible uses, both in the Old and the New Covenants, is retelling the same story with different characters. This does not mean any of the stories are fictional, but instead shows God’s hand in history.
- Both take place in a foreign land (Egypt and Persia).
- Both take place under “captivity” (Slavery and Remnants of Exile)
- Both take place under Gentile governments (Egypt and Persia).
- Both Exodus and Esther, there is the proposed destruction on a mass scale of the “Jews.”
- Both have a main character adopted (Moses and Esther).
- Both Moses and Esther are taken in by the royal families (Adoption and Harem).
- Both have reluctant saviors (Moses and Esther)
- Both have forgotten heroes (Joseph is forgotten after his dream interpretation and Mordecai’s heroics are forgotten after despoiling assignation plot).
- Both have hidden identity of heroes (Joseph to brothers and Esther to all).
- Both have the identities revealed at dinners (Joseph with brothers and Esther with King and Haman).
- Both have the identities revealed on the third time (Joseph’s brothers time before Joseph; Esther’s third party with King and Haman).
- Both times the enemies destroyed (Egypt in Red Sea; By decree of King).
- Both explain Festivals (Exodus explains the Passover; Esther the Feast of Purim).
- Both have a “Jew” rising to second in rank (Joseph and Mordecai).
