2 Kings 6-7 – Windows of Grace
Following one of the most horrific scenes, comes a story in which we gain a glimpse of the gospel. In 2 Kings 6, the famine is so bad, These Judeans, the people of God, resort to possibly the most despicable acts ever: cannibalism, including their own children.
Then Elisha promises God’s relief. Listen to the question asked by the captain, “Look, even if the LORD were to makes windows in heaven, could this really happen?” (2 Kings 7:2). More on that at the end, but here notice gifts from God coming down from windows in heaven. Do you see Jesus?
Later, diseased men, many translations say leprosy, discover the unexpected bounty. Jesus healed many diseased men. Like those Jesus healed, they go and tell others of the good news (7:9). The gospel is good news! The king didn’t believe, as many leaders didn’t believe Jesus or his apostles.
There is sadness in this story of grace. The captain who didn’t believe, who said “Look, even if the LORD were to make windows in heaven, could this really happen?” (7:19), was told due to his unbelief, he would not eat of the bounty. And he didn’t. He was trampled in the gateway and died a horrific death. The good news is only good for those who believe the impossible.
