2 Samuel 12:16; 16:21-22 – Was Bathsheba An Adulteress or Raped?
Seeing David and Bathsheba as simply a story of adultery misses the lex taliones reprisals. Notice “I will take your wives and give them to another before your very eyes, and he will sleep with them publicly” (2Sam.12.16) and the fulfillment, “Sleep with your father’s concubines he left to take care of the palace. When all Israel hears that you have become repulsive to your father, everyone with you will be encouraged. So they pitched a tent for Absalom on the roof (i.e, where David’s troubles began), and he slept with his father’s concubines in the sight of all Israel” (2 Sam.16.21-22). This is reprisal simply adultery by brazen women or “power rape?”
